Recognised Standard 11 and GIQ

Recongised Standard 11 and General Induction Queensland

What is GIQ Coal?

GIQ Coal is a new course on offer for anyone working in the Queensland coal mining industry. The course was developed in response to the introduction of Recognised Standard 11 which is a new Standard for meeting health and safety obligations in the coal mining industry in Queensland.

Who can do the GIQ Coal course?

The GIQ Coal course is primarily designed for short-term contractors who move between multiple sites and have current industry experience relevant to their role. Examples of this type of experience may include trade experience, heavy industry experience or mining experience. Our GI Licensed Providers (Registered Training Organisations) can assist in the identification of those with appropriate skills and experience for GIQ.
Cleanskins (people who do not have the required skills or experience) cannot complete the GIQ course in its normal 3 to 4 day format; they will need additional time to learn and demonstrate competency. The Skills Centre recommends that cleanskins complete an employment pathway program. These programs will ideally include a GIQ passport outcome and may be based around specific skills sets or qualifications.

Course Structure

The GIQ course includes an industry specific module, core learning, and an optional underground elective.

The Course uses high-technology simulation through the incorporation of PROJECT CANARY, group activities and role playing to accelerate learning. Participants are assessed throughout the Course against the following units of competency:

Surface

• RIIOHS201A - Work safely and follow OHS policies and procedures • RIIERR205A - Apply initial response first aid • RIIGOV201A - Comply with site work processes/procedures • RIIRIS201A - Conduct local risk control • RIICOM201A - Communicate in the workplace • RIIERR302A - Respond to local emergencies and incidents

Additional unit for Underground

• RIIERR203A - Escape from a hazardous situation unaided

GI Passport Design Changes

The GI passport has been redesigned to accommodate the new GIQ courses. Please find below examples of the GIQ Coal Surface and GIQ Coal Underground passports.
